Catching Up with Alumnus Dr. Alyson Ainsworth

Alyson is originally from Charlottesville and started playing polo while at Virginia Polo while attending UVA. She was a fixture around the barn throughout her college years, feeding ponies and helping with vet care (a foreshadowing of her future career). She quickly improved her polo skills in the club and played with the women's varsity team. Some of her favorite memories of Virginia Polo are bringing the ponies in in the morning with fellow club mates and meeting lifelong friends like Molly and Lindsey.

After UVA Aly went on to Virginia Tech's Veterinary Program where she focused on equine medicine and graduated in 2012. She followed vet school with an internship at the Atlantic Veterinary College in Canada, then worked for 6 years at Valley Equine Associates in WV primarily working with racehorses and broodmares.

Aly moved back to Charlottesville and in 2021 started her own equine veterinary practice, Afton Mountain Equine, and now cares for horses in Albemarles surrounding counties. In addition to routine veterinary services, she offers equine chiropractic care and veterinary acupuncture.

She adopted two retired Virginia Polo ponies, Rivera and Woodrow, and enjoys trail riding them around the area.

In addition to her veterinary practice Aly volunteers on the board of Aftercare Charles Town, a non-profit that re-homes racehorses after they retire from racing.

Aly remains connected to the Virginia Polo Club, last spring she led the charge for a group of equine vets to come provide free chiropractic care to the VA Polo ponies- something we and they greatly appreciated! (Check out an article on this here).
