Join us, we love sharing the fun of polo!

Introductory Boot Camp is offered in both the fall and spring semesters for UVA, PVCC, and local high school students interested in learning to play polo.

Email info@vapolo.org with questions or if you would like to sign up for spring 2024.

Boot Camp consists of 10 Saturday morning lessons over the course of a semester and teaches basic polo skills to beginner players who already have a foundation in riding. The program is run by club members and guided by Assistant Coach Elka.

Lesson groups are small and individual attention is given to each rider to help you improve on each new skill.

After successful completion of Boot Camp new players are invited to join the club team and ride daily. This is a great introduction to polo, many current club members, and some varsity players, were introduced to polo through Boot Camp.

Skills you should have:

  • Experience with horses

  • Ability to walk, trot, and canter in control. Western and English backgrounds are welcome!

Among the skills you will learn are:

  • Identifying polo bits, tacking with polo saddle and bridle, wrapping legs, tying up the tail

  • How to swing the mallet

  • Polo style riding: holding two sets of reins in one hand, body position when hitting the ball

  • Learning to adjust your riding to different horses

  • Bumping

  • Fouls and rules of the game

  • Playing chukkers

The cost of Boot Camp is $500. Payment for Boot Camp dues can be easily made via check or Venmo (@Virginia-Polo-1). Please send questions to info@vapolo.org.

Look for us at RecFest and the Student Activities Fair! These are excellent opportunities to meet club members and organize your introduction to polo.
