Virginia Polo Club Awards

The Cavalier Award

A highest honor, this award is reserved for those who’ve been instrumental in the building and perpetuating of the Virginia Polo program.

Cavalier Award Recipients

2021 Dick “Remo” Riemenschneider

Dick “Remo” Riemenschneider (UVA ‘59, Law ‘64) was presented with the inaugural Cavalier Award. Remo embodied the spirit of Virginia Polo, he came to the club in 1955 as an undergraduate and stayed involved with supporting the club until his passing in 2022.

Remo received this award for his role in founding the Virginia Polo Club, being the driving force in creating the Endowment Fund, continuously securing donations for the program, and for his contributions to creating polo players through countless hours of sharing his knowledge and love of polo and horses with his fellow students during his time on the team.

2022 Dan Colhoun

Dan (UVA ‘58) was recognized for his dedicated efforts to building the Virginia Polo program to what it is today, his contributions to the master plan for the facility, and his tireless efforts in UVA relations with the program. He cherished the lessons he learned helping develop the Virginia Polo Club and tirelessly works to ensure current students will also gain essential life skills from the club.

He has been an instrumental part of the program's success and a role model for alumni support.

2023 Rob Rinehart

Since his childhood years of walking hots for the early student players Rob has been an essential part of Virginia Polo. Following his years in the club (UVA ‘74) he was the first coach (unpaid volunteer) and led the 1987 team to UVA’s first National Championship. In addition to that valuable contribution, Rob has remained involved throughout his life, serving as Chairman of the Virginia Polo Board of Directors where he led the board in its governance of the nonprofit Club for many successful years as the club fundraised and grew.

Rob continues to coach and instruct within the club and at summer clinics, and assists in an advisory capacity for the Board. Rob remains a familiar face at Virginia Polo, helping to teach new generations of UVA polo players and a common thread connecting generations of alumni at the Virginia Polo Club since the 1960’s.

2025 Earle Betts

Earle (UVA ‘72) was selected for this prestigious award for the significant role he played in the growth of the Virginia Polo Club. His contributions through the last 50 years include his time, planning, a barn, truck, and trailer- all extremely important components of a polo farm- and much more.

Earle understood the importance of Virginia Polo owning its own land and he was a motivating force behind purchasing the land. His thoughtfulness of selling the development rights on the land was a great source of support for the still developing Virginia Polo program, the proceeds doubled the fledgling Virginia Polo Endowment. Earle’s guidance has steered the Board forward and his devotion has inspired others to find how they best can benefit the Polo Club.
