Communications and Events Coordinator

Virginia Polo Center hosts a premier intercollegiate polo program with a mission to provide affordable polo, leadership opportunities, life skills, and character building for UVA students. The Center is seeking a motivated communications and events coordinator with an entrepreneurial spirit.


  • Develop and execute an annual communications strategy and quarterly editorial calendar

  • Act as a liaison with UVA to strengthen relationships—e.g., with admissions, alumni, and student activities departments—and increase campus profile

  • Encourage student leadership communication efforts, e.g., annual magazine and phone-a-thon

  • Update website content (Squarespace CMS)

  • Regularly send e-newsletters (MailChimp) and manage contacts list/CRM

  • Prepare and distribute printed publications and collateral

  • Manage/oversee social media efforts on Facebook and Instagram

  • Manage media relations with, e.g., polo publications, UVA publications (ex. “Cavalier Daily”), local print, TV, and radio

  • Promote events and provide logistical support, as needed

  • Ascertain additional events/venue and sponsorship opportunities for, e.g., student morale, community outreach, and income generation


  • BA/BS Degree or equivalent experience

  • 2+ year(s) of experience with traditional and digital marketing is preferred

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to be on-site at the Center weekly and manage a flexible work schedule

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision; ability to prioritize and work efficiently

  • Results-oriented with great attention to detail and highly organized

  • High comfort level with computer technology including Microsoft Office and Google Drive; experience with donor database software is a plus

  • Design experience using Adobe Creative Cloud suite (Photoshop and InDesign) is a plus

  • Proficiency in Spanish is a plus


Full-time salaried position, starting at $32k

Additional Details

A self-supporting organization, Virginia Polo is not subsidized by the University of Virginia. The Coordinator will develop effective communications and coordinate event logistics in support of the Center’s long-term viability. Objectives include:

  • maintaining an optimal number of student participants based on facility, horses, and coaching;

  • attracting top polo talent;

  • developing a pipeline of future players; and

  • engendering a deeper connection with VA Polo experience with students, alumni, and donors.

Events hosted as the Center may include:

  • Student events, e.g., boot camp lessons series, annual student orientation, UVA student activities fair;

  • Regular season UVA games;

  • USPA interscholastic and intercollegiate tournaments;

  • U.S. Open polo tournaments;

  • Summer camps and Polo Training Foundation clinics;

  • Bi-annual Board meetings; and

  • Community outreach events, e.g., field trips for schools, pony clubs, etc.

The Coordinator will collaborate with student leadership, office admin/accountant, coaches, and board members.
